KIBERA, Kenya- Prolific goal poacher Veron Ombima has been awarded for maintaining his goal pumping spree in the FKF National Super League (NSL) where he is leading the pack on 12 goals.

Ombima was honoured on Wednesday evening in Nairobi during Darajani Gogo FC Gala Awards and celebrations to mark the team’s 10-Year anniversary.

Ombima has been instrumental for the NSL outfit, with his goals ensuring they still have their eyes on the prize- which is to qualify for the FKF Premier League next season.

The team is currently perched fourth on the NSL standings, on 33 points after 19 matches.

“This award has inspired and motivated me to work even more harder to ensure I lift the league’s top scorer gong at the end of the season,” Ombima told Standard Sports.

“I want to thank the coach who has equipped me with vital tips and my team mates who have provided relevant assists and unity to ensure I’m sharp and solid on the goal mouth,” he underscored.

Others awarded during the Gala, that also honoured and acknowledged top achieving players and sponsors, included team captain Hubeib Ali (MVP), Paul Odhiambo (Best goalkeeper), Lenny Ochieng (Best Midfielder) and assistant captain Brian Wepo (Best Defender).

The celebrations also saw various sponsors come on board to raise Sh9.6 million in cash and Sh500,000 in kind to help the club complete the remainder of the season.

Contributors for the cash included Dr. Kalebi Labs (Sh6 millions), Kenya Red Cross (Sh2 million), Freedom Airlines (Sh1.5 million) and Mazrui Auditors (Sh100,000).

Sh 500,000 in kind was donated by E-Plus who will avail to the team fully equipped ambulance during their NSL games.

At the same time, the team also unveiled its home, away and neutral away jersey during the occasion.

“Our vision is to get KPL promotion so these funds will be vital for our away fixtures which have been quite a challenge to honour,” Ali stated.

Despite some of the questionable officiating in the league, the skipper reiterated that their eyes are still fixed on the ultimate prize which is to gain automatic KPL promotion or, if worse, proceed for the NSL/KPL play-off at the end of the season.

For the above dream to be realised, the skipper suggests they should beef up their defence and the attacking forward.

“We already have good players, we just need to add a few prolific ones to give the squad depth as there are still so many matches to be played,” Ali stated.

While narrating their six-year support to the club, Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Ahmed Idris noted: ” It has been a resilience walk. Partnering with Darajani Gogo FC is not only support to sports but also to opportunities, communities and to a journey of faith, to help these boys from Kibera to develop and nurture their talents.

“There is a need for the private sector to give young men and women in underprivileged areas assistance to get the space, resources, time and attention to develop their dreams.”

Darajani Gogo FC was formed 10 years ago by the club patron, Ahmed Kalebi after he successfully rehabilitated ‘Vijana Wa Gogo’ gang that terrorised Kibera residents and at one point was outlawed by the then Internal Security and Provincial Administration Minister, the late John Michuki.

The team had a successful run in the 2025 FKF Sub County League which they finished unbeaten. They then spent two seasons in the FKF County League before gaining subsequent promotions into FKF Regional, Division 2, Division 1 leagues and now the NSL.

” We are proud to be the first club, outside KPL, to have replica jerseys for our fans and so far, we have sold 400,” Kalebi underlined.

Freedom Airline Chairman Ali Abdulkadir and Brenda Kwena of E-Plus pledged their continued support to the club which they said plays some good football worth watching.
