SIGONA, Kenya- Isaack Kariuki is the 2022 Sigona Golf Club Chairman’s Prize champion.

Kariuki amassed an aggregate of 71 stableford points in the two day tournament to beat a large field who searched for glory in the high profile event.

Playing off handicap 18, the IT expert fired 38 points on Saturday and a further 33 on Sunday that led to his crowning.

“This is very fantastic, I had set out this year to lower my handicap which stood at 25 in January, I’m happy that this is gradually happening,” Kariuki told Standard Sports.

The father of three admitted there have been challenges toward achieving his target in the game this year but nonetheless he is glad to be on the right direction.

“I have been working round the clock to ensure the goals are met, so this victory marks a significant turning point because we are almost toward the end of the year and tournaments are getting fewer and fewer.

“For me to score today and come out as the overall winner is a reinforcement that it can be done, I would like to communicate the same to anyone doing a positive thing out there that it is achievable,” he underlined.

Kariuki described the Chairman’s Prize as a tough, challenging, engaging and very exciting tournament.

“It was a well organised competition with well-structured activities in between games and thereafter,” he said.

Due to his state of fitness, gained from playing the sport all throughout the year, Kariuki did not need to do any elaborate preparations ahead of the competition.

“This victory is a culmination of all the efforts I have put in the game all throughout the year,” he stated.

Some of the tournaments that Kariuki won in 2022 at the lush, green and well rolled Sigona golf course are the Jumbo Championships and two Club Nights.

The victories have inspired Kariuki who is now focused to play international tournaments for Kenya next year should he get the opportunity.

His plan is to turn pro in 2025.

Outgoing Sigona Golf Club Chairman Miq Assaria was pleased with the solid turn out for the Chairman’s Prize, a tournament which marked the end of his successful one year tenure in office.

Assaria will be officially replaced by his deputy Gakuo Ndirangu in December.

“The event was well attended, we had a whole week of games and entertainment, the members came through with flying colours,” Assaria highlighted.

“The members supported me, they have been very wonderful throughout the year, I’m really pleased the way this week turned out,” he said.

Assaria’s greatest achievement in his one year term was to unite the Sigona membership that was polarised by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic that devastated the club.

“I’m happy to have brought the members back on the same stage, we are hoping for better days ahead,” Assaria said.
