Elgeyo Marakwet County Set To Present Ultimate 15Km Road Race In Iten

NAIROBI, Kenya- Athletics Kenya and Betika have partnered to host a 15Km road race in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, this Sunday, May 12th, 2024.
The road race has been designed to test participants’ speed, endurance, and determination, offering a chance for seasoned professionals and newcomers alike to shine in the legendary Iten roads, known across the globe as the “Home of Champions.”
Elevating the anticipation, seasoned veterans in long-distance running, such as Helah Kiprop and John Korir, are expected to join the road race fray, setting a higher standard for competition and serving as an inspiration to up-and-coming athletes.
Athletics Kenya, the governing body of athletics, have expressed their excitement for the race, stating, “The Iten 15km Road Race is testament to Kenya’s rich sporting heritage and the spirit of resilience ingrained in our athletes. With over 1,000 local and international participants expected to line up at the starting point, this race is not just about competition, it is a celebration of human potential and the relentless pursuit of greatness.”
In recognition of their outstanding performance, the top male and female runners alike will receive a Sh250,000 cash prize, symbolising their dedication and excellence. Second and third place achievers will receive rewards of Sh150,000 and Sh100,000, respectively.
Participants who narrowly miss clinching a podium spot will receive some acknowledgment, with fourth and fifth place finishers earning a commendable Sh50,000 and Sh40,000 respectively.
Adding an extra layer of thrill to the competition, participants finishing between sixth and tenth place in both the men’s and women’s categories will each be awarded Sh 20,000, ensuring that every stride counts in this exhilarating event.

Betika Managing Director, Mutua Mutava commented on the race saying: “At Betika, we believe in empowering athletes and fostering a culture of healthy competition. The Iten 15Km Road Race is not just a race—it’s an opportunity for athletes to push their limits, inspire others, and be rewarded for their dedication and hard work.”
Winners will only be awarded if they pass the rigorous drug tests conducted after the race by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK). Should any anomalies arise, the awards will be passed on to the next deserving athlete, ensuring a level playing field for all participants.
This edition of the Iten road race marks the third road race sponsored by Betika in Iten and the eighth athletics event in the Rift Valley region over the last six months, underscoring Betika’s commitment to supporting grassroots sporting initiatives and nurturing athletic talent across Kenya.
Registration is currently underway at the County Start Hotel in Iten and the Sports Complex in Kapsabet.
