Teams Kitted As Sakaja Super Cup Gains Momentum
NAIROBI, Kenya- The remaining 136 football teams representing various sub counties in Nairobi have today being issued with sets of uniforms as the competition gains momentum in the second edition of the annual tournament.
In an event attended by team representatives, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja congratulated teams that advanced from the group stage at the sub-county level challenging them to strive towards the ultimate prize.
Speaking, Sakaja,who was flanked by Makadara MP George Aladwa noted that playing fields remain the major hindrance in sports and pledged to develop more sports facilities around the county. Particularly, Sakaja promised to upgrade the Githurai Pandpieri grounds to stadium status as a gift to the Sakaja Super Cup inaugural winners Githurai All Stars.
“This tournament is transforming our youths. It began last year but already making youth transform. Under my administration, we take note that we havr a shortage of facilities. We are mainstreaming sports, and I want to ask our MCA’s not to cut the sports budget so that we build more stadiums. For GAS,we shall build a stadium at pandpieri as their gift for winning the first edition,” Sakaja said.
At the same time, Sakaja disclosed plans to build a new stadium at the jacaranda grounds in a plan that will see the county also build a school and other public amenities at the historic grounds that is synonymous with political gatherings.
“We have secured six acres of land at the jacaranda grounds where we are going to build a modern stadium. The turf for Woodly and Joe Kadenge is almost here. We are using Dandora Stadium as the measure so every stadium we construct must be better than Dandora stadium which all of us know it has transformed the community around there.
This phase of the Sakaja Super Cup features eight teams per sub-county, divided into two groups and reflects the tournament’s growing momentum and the commitment to promoting grassroots football.
More than 700 were entered into the competition which has this year taken the elimination knock out format. 136 teams in all sub counties remain. Teams kitted as Sakaja Super Cup ahead of group match ups.

Nairobi county Chief Officer in the department of Youth talent and sports Oscar Igaida said that the county was investing heavily in sports infrastructure and soon, a lack of football grounds will be a thing of the past.
“We have a governor who loves sports and we are building stadiums. The county government is investing heavily on sports. I can confirm that the turf for Joe Kadenge and Woodly are already on the high seas. We want every estate to have a proper sports facility,” Igaida said.
At the same time, Sakaja Johnson Foundation team leader Osman Khalif said that 38 women’s teams, two from each sub county are set to begin their competition as the foundation further explores the possibility of organizing a youth league along with the men and women elite competition.
Winners of sub county groups are set to be rewarded with Ksh 100, 000 next week as every sub county runner up get Ksh 50,000.
The finals of this years competition will be held at the Dandora Satadium. of Youth talent and sports Oscar Igaida said that the county was investing heavily in sports infrastructure and soon, a lack of football grounds will be a thing of the past.
