DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania- Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia FC are staring at the 2024 Cecafa Kagame Cup exit after a 1-1 draw with Asas Telecom of Djibouti in their second Group B fixture staged on Saturday night at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.
Levin Odhiambo scored for Gor Mahia in the 39th minute but Warsama Houssein equalized for the opponents just two minutes later.
The results leave K’Ogalo with only a point after the Kenyan outfit went down 1-0 against Red Arrows of Zambia last Wednesday.
Gor will need victory against well-oiled Al Hilal of Sudan in their final Group match on Tuesday in order to revive their hopes of staying in the tournament.
Al Hilal are already through to the semis following their 2-0 victory against Asas and 5-0 thrashing of Red Arrows.
Only the top teams from the three groups and the best runner up will advance to the semis in the 12-team competition.
Sriker Benson Omalla
“We have to be serious now, we have to give more than a hundred percent if we want to stay in this tournament,” Kenyan Premier League Golden Boot winner Benson Omalla told the media after one of the training sessions in Dar.
“My aim is to play football at the top level and Cecafa now gives us that avenue to showcase our skills to the continent.
“The scouts are here and who knows if one could be spotted. We are also using this tournament as a pre -season training for the KPL and the forthcoming CAF Champions League which will also be another very rich platform to show ourselves to Africa and the world,” Omalla added.
Gor last lifted the Cecafa trophy in 1985 after beating compatriots and perennial rivals AFC Leopards 2-1 in the final. Gor is looking for a fourth title in the regional showpiece.
