Joyce Murigi Triumphs At SBM Bank-Sponsored Golf Club’s 2024 Lady Captain’s Prize

NAIROBI, Kenya- Joyce Murigi emerged the overall winner at the SBM Bank-sponsored Muthaiga Golf Club Lady Captain’s Prize Golf Tournament that culminated the past weekend.

SBM Bank pumped 1.5 million Kenya shillings in sponsorship to the annual prestigious tournament that teed off last Monday, including 1 million Kenya shillings in cash and 500,000 Kenya shillings in kind in an aim to continue reinforcing its partnership with the club as well as its dedication to supporting the sport.

Speaking during the awarding ceremony, the outgoing Lady Captain Regina Gachora thanked SBM for sponsoring the tournament, giving her gratitude as well to the members for the chance to serve as the Lady Captain.

“My theme was wellness, and we were looking at different kinds of wellness including financial wellness which is why SBM came on board, and we really appreciate them. I am thankful to every member of Muthaiga Golf Club for giving me the opportunity to deliver as the Lady Captain,” she said.

The handicap 22 Murigi returned an excellent score of 39 points on Saturday to trounce over all other golfers and emerge the overall winner, clinching an air ticket to Mauritius in the process.

Handicap 14 Brianna Ngecu carded 38 points to win the Ladies Division One title ahead of Olive Njagi (Handicap 17) who scored 37 as Susan Kanyora managed 38 points as well while playing off handicap 23 to take the crown in Division Two beating Hannah Gatu (Handicap 30) who settled for the second place in the division.

Aiddah Yusuf win Division Three, with 2018 Muthaiga Golf Club Lady Captain Patricia Ngina and Bernadette Irungu claiming the nearest to the pin and longest drive prizes respectively.

Golf Kenya President Phillip Ochola won the men’s category after 41 points ahead of David Geita who carded 40 points. Daniel Kiragu won the boys category as Aidan Gachora finished second.

The week-long tournament included various activities and tournaments across the week, including a Caddies Tournament on Monday and a Senior’s Tournament on Thursday as the special events for the tournament.

SBM Bank Head of Marketing and Communications, Magdalene Mulandi outlined the bank’s commitment to supporting the growth of golf in Kenya, banking on the fast-growing partnership with Muthaiga Golf Club to achieve this.

“We supported the Chairman’s Prize tournament last year and this year we came back for the Lady Captain’s Prize. We aim to build on  our long standing  relationship with Muthaiga Golf Club” she said.

Following the exit of Regina Gachora as the Lady Captain, Daphne Maina is set to take the reigns at the helm for the next year.
